Teaching has been a passion of mine for years, and I feel fortunate to pass on the knowledge I have gained over the years studying with some of the world’s foremost pedagogues.
I love teaching students of all ages: I’ve prepared serious pre-college students for recitals, worked with adults ready to learn their first musical instrument, and shown 4 year-olds how to pick up their violin for the first time. My students have won the highest Distinction award in the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music, the international standard in music exams.
Although I emphasize a disciplined technical foundation from the start, I strive to foster curiosity and love for the music that my students create. The ultimate goal is for them to develop the creativity and dedication necessary to play beautiful music– which is equally valuable in any other of life’s pursuits.
My home studio is located in Los Feliz. First lesson is always free. Please email firstname.lastname@example.org for information on rates and availability. I look forward to hearing from you!
“You don’t need to look any further for a violin instructor/performer.
I am an adult who never learned to play a musical instrument (except the recorder briefly in grade school which I don’t count) or ever learned how to read notes, sheet music, etc. I always had an interest in learning to play an instrument and especially the violin so I finally decided to take the plunge.
I found Michelle through the SF Conservatory of Music and am so lucky I did. In addition to being very nice, Michelle is extremely patient, flexible (with my work/travel schedule), inspiring, fun and really knows HOW to teach. She isn’t too cerebral that she can’t relay to someone for which learning music is like learning another language. She is great at “dummying down” what needs to be for me which I appreciate and find very helpful. And she does it in a way that shows she really cares and wants the student to succeed.
In a very short amount of time I learned how to read the notes/music and actually play! And also importantly, because Michelle has such an easygoing and fun personality, I was excited to practice in between lessons, not feeling burdened. Michelle really inspired me. I am VERY sad and sorry that Michelle left SF but it’s LA’s gain and you would be lucky to have her as your teacher. I was.”
“Michelle is the best teacher I’ve ever had. She had really great tips and teaching methods. She doesn’t just have you practice songs, she teaches you the techniques and how to play it right. She does it in a fun, positive way too. She always pointed out my strengths and worked to improve my weaknesses. She also helped me to challenge myself on techniques and songs I never would have attempted before. Above all, she increased my confidence and joy in playing.
I thought it’d take a second stab at the violin after quitting 10 yrs ago to see for sure if it was or wasn’t for me- now I love playing and I owe a huge part of that to Michelle.”
“Michelle was my teacher in SF for the past year and she was incredible! I’m an adult student and learning a new instrument, especially violin, is challenging, and Michelle was inspiring, patient and so much fun to learn from. She brought so much joy to my lessons, gave really specific/constructive and helpful feedback, and always came prepared with a variety of pieces and exercises to supplement my learning.”
“Michelle taught our 8 year old daughter violin and we highly recommend her as an enthusiastic, caring and diligent teacher with a great empathy for her students. Our daughter loved her lessons with Michelle and always tried her best due to the positive environment Michelle creates with her students.”
“I know Michelle for over two years and my 9-year old son took Violin lessons and I must say that during this time he made tremendous progress under her able guidance. Michelle is very enthusiastic teacher and is extremely friendly with the kids. We never knew about the some of the noted Orchestra groups in our area. She not only encouraged my son to appear for the audition but also helped him acquire all required technique to get through the auditions. Now we are proud to say that my son is part of Palo Alto Chamber of Orchestra (PACO). We are extremely happy and thankful for her guidance. Michelle will be a great teacher to have for any violin enthusiasts, starting from beginner to advanced levels.”
“Music City Academy located in San Francisco has been most fortunate to have worked with Michelle Kim for over a year until she relocated back to Los Angeles in late September, 2011.
Michelle has been an immensely popular teacher among her students while providing teaching services here. She is positive, resourceful and professional with a cheeful disposition. Apart from being a virtuosic violinist as fully demonstrated by her riveting performances at our student recitals, one of her greatest strengths is her ability to encourage students and sustain their interests in violin playing. She often goes extra miles to keep them engaged, including playing duets with beginners at recitals as well as during regular lessons.
I have no hesitation in recommending Michelle to parents and prospective students.”

“I am a 12 year-old who lives in San Francisco , and has been a student of Michelle Kim for over a year now. Sadly she is moving back to LA, but I have to say she is a wonderful violinist and teacher. I will never forget all the fun times we had, and all the recitals I played in and most of all, how proud Michelle is of me. I am very lucky to have had Michelle as my teacher.”
